Trio of Hat teams win at Edmonton Slush Cup

By Medicine Hat News on March 7, 2020.

Seven Medicine Hat soccer teams were in Edmonton last weekend for the Slush Cup indoor tournament, with three of them taking gold medals home.

The under-17 Tier 2 boys coached by Hugh Lehr beat Edmonton’s Scottish United 4-1 in the final. Kelton Flaigh had three of the team’s eight goals on the weekend, with Joel Lehr and Ethan McClelland adding two apiece and Holden Lehr the other.

Coach Lehr noted in a press release Thursday that it was his team’s third tournament win in a row.

The under-13 Tier 2 boys coached by Damir Omerovic went 2-1 in their round robin, good enough for a spot in the final which they won, though no score or opposing team was reported.

Cameron McCarty’s under-13 Tier 2 girls claimed their second-straight tournament title, concluding with a 4-2 win over Edmonton Southwest Sting.

McCarty reported that Milah McCarty had three goals, Eva Ricken the game-winner and the Rattlers side came from behind thanks in part to keeper Emersyn Grudecki.

Ricken had five goals on the weekend, McCarty seven, Rayne Bueckert two and Sophie Gourlay-Barnson one.

Other Hat teams had mixed results. Melissa Hozack’s under-15 girls went 1-2, a third-place finish setting them up for provincials in Okotoks. The under-17 girls coached by Allan Siwela went 2-1 for a fifth-place standing. Sam Poole’s under-13 boys also went 2-1, highlighted by an 11-1 win over an Edmonton side, while Cassie Westerman’s under-11 girls went 1-2 but finished with a strong 6-0 win.
