The host Medicine Hat Hounds kicked off the South Central Alberta Hockey League’s midget AA South Conference playoff tournament with a 2-0 victory over the Foothills Bisons on Thursday night at Moose Recreation Centre.
Cayden Dumanowski scored just over a minute into the second period to break open a scoreless contest then Evan Gebhardt added some insurance eight minutes later before holding down the fort in the third.
Hounds goaltender Nate Hoffman stopped 17 shots to secure the shutout victory.
Dylan Fries-Abel made 43 saves for Foothills in the loss.
The Hounds continue the tournament with two more games at the Moose today. After facing the Okotoks Oilers at 10:45 a.m., the Hounds will move on to host the Taber Golden Suns at 5:15 p.m.
The top four teams following Friday’s action will advance to Saturday’s semifinals, with a ticket to Sunday’s 1:15 p.m. championship game up for grabs.
