The Medicine Hat Rattlers women’s volleyball team watched their hold on fourth in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference South Division dwindle to just two points following a three-set loss (25-17, 25-17, 25-23) to the Ambrose Lions on Friday night at the Snake Pit.

Dryden Gris and Megan Hoeber shared the team high of just four kills while Ambrose’s Julia Kemper racked up a dozen to hand the Rattlers their seventh consecutive loss.

Shaya Suchy dug out 18 on defence for Medicine Hat, while Jennifer Saj assisted on nine kills.

Ambrose improved to 13-8 with their third straight victory.

Medicine Hat now sits at 8-13, while the Lethbridge Kodiaks improved to 7-14 with a win over the SAIT Trojans Friday. Medicine Hat has already locked up the fourth and final playoff berth as hosts of the ACAC championship at the end of the month. With just three games left in the regular season, the Kodiaks cannot catch Ambrose for a playoff spot, but will be looking to close out their campaign with a moral victory by passing Medicine Hat in the standings.

Men’s volleyball

The Rattlers men’s volleyball team snapped a six-game losing streak in dominant fashion with a three-set victory over Ambrose (25-12, 25-21, 25-21) to close out Friday’s doubleheader at the Snake Pit.

Aleksa Zivic led Medicine Hat to the victory with a 12-kill performance, while Nikola Sreckovic set up 29 and Ty Moline dug out eight on defence.

Mark Fountain recorded six kills and three digs for Ambrose in the loss. Jared Vanderzwaag set up 13.

Medicine Hat improved to 5-16 with the victory. They now have sole possession of fifth in the ACAC South, however they cannot catch the Briercrest Clippers for the fourth and final playoff spot.

Ambrose fell to 1-20 with the loss.

The Rattlers and Lions return to the court for a rematch on Saturday night in Calgary.

Medicine Hat College’s basketball teams will host the St. Mary’s Lightning on Saturday evening at the Snake Pit with tip-offs at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m.
