Nominations for the province’s highest honour are now open until the middle of February. Each year the Alberta Order of Excellence announces new members who have provided lasting contributions to the province through “outstanding and distinguished” service. Local members include former MLA and cabinet minister Jim Horsman, artist Jim Marshall, city alderman and civic booster Ken Sauer, and businessmen and philanthropist Bill Yuill. Last year’s inductees included Hatter Malcom Sissons, whose citation details his work in historic preservation alongside business achievements. Applications are handled through the Lieutenant Governor’s office and evaluated by a council. Members include notable artists, politicians, athletes and academics, among others. Nominees must be Canadian citizens residing in Alberta, and cannot be nominated by themselves or close family members. Posthumous applications are also not considered. 8
