Evelyn Kleis has been an artist for quite some time and her art will be showcased at the Medicine Hat Public Library until the end of next month.
Kleis is showcasing 20 pieces for the year 2020 in her gallery, displaying a number of different styles and themes in her work.
“I started painting as a child because my mother was quite a well-known artist here,” she said. “As a kid I would draw and paint and I eventually went to school where I did a bit more drama.
“When I came back they had classes set up – that’s when I started really doing regular painting and drawing.”
Kleis booked her show in the fall and is showcasing pieces from her career – some have never seen the public eye.
“Some of these are just from around the house,” she said. “They haven’t been shown at any galleries or anything.
“The most recent pieces are the funny little drip pieces that are horses.”
While she works in a number of different styles and experiments with different ways to work, Kleis says she does have preferred ways for her art.
“The oil painting is my favourite,” she said. “It’s nice to branch off and try different things.
“There’s mixed media, oil paint, water colour and little drawn pieces with acrylic.”
Kleis says the gallery is called “On the Edge of What is Visible” and offers a good bit of variety.
“The point is, even when you’re looking right at something, you’re not seeing it all,” she said. “Others, like the horses, are used to express movement.”
The gallery is on the lower floor of the public library near the theatre.
