In the leadup to the biggest event on the local boxing scene, three Medicine Hat pugilists had mixed results.

At the Cougar Boxing Show in Edmonton this past weekend, Janick Lacroix was the lone winner but both Francis Ang and Tristan Deveau had nothing to hang their heads about.

Lacroix, the reigning national silver medallist, moved up a weight class and an age group to fight Mohamad Mogabi from Lac La Biche. It was a one-sided affair, with coach Kerry Fahlman reporting “by the end of the second round it was all Janick.”

“After some vicious body shots and two standing eight counts the referee stopped the contest and gave Janick the win,” he wrote in an email.

Deveau was supposed to be up against and Edmonton fighter, but illness resulted in a bout with nationa team member Sasan Haghighat-Jo from Vancouver instead. The B.C. champ dominated with a first-round stoppage, Fahlman noting Deveau simply wasn’t ready for that level of an opponent on the evening.

Ang was in tough and lost a close fight to Vancouver’s Ejaz Mahamad, but also learned plenty.

All three fighters are expected to be in action at the Nieman/Page Memorial on Jan. 11 and 12 at Homestay Inn and Suites, which doubles as the Alberta Silver Gloves tournament and is two weeks before provincials.
