They aren’t the top-level team from their age group in the city, but the Medicine Hat Knights proved they’re not lacking for talent, or desire to win.
The midget-level squad won a tournament in Airdrie this past weekend, going 4-0 despite injuries limiting the size of their bench to as few as two lines according to coach Nick Douvis.
Medicine Hat beat Sherwood Park 16-1, then Airdrie Lightning D 4-3. A 6-4 win over Lightning A sent them to the final, where they doubled up Lightning A by an 8-4 score.
Midget AA
The Knights weren’t the only local midget team to have an unbeaten weekend. The AA Jasper Homes Hounds won a pair of road games in Lethbridge and Okotoks.
At Lethbridge Friday, a 4-1 win saw call-up Austin Derzaph score along with Jase Fleury, Callen Prosofsky and Ty Moore. Cayden Dumanowski’s two assists were key, as were goalie Nate Hoffman’s 23 saves.
On Sunday in Okotoks, Connor Miller’s hat trick led the way in a 5-2 win. Caleb Irvine and Kobyn Fritz added singles, Brendan Olson made 16 saves and Cameron Hall had a pair of helpers.
Medicine Hat hosts Lethbridge this Saturday, 4:45 p.m. at the Kinplex in their last game of 2019.
Midget 15’s
The South East Athletic Club’s midget 15-year-old Tigers fell 7-4 on home ice Saturday to the Calgary Blackhawks.
Daniel Ganert, Zach Hauck, Josh Drefs and Aiden Ma scored and goalie Landon Porteous let up six goals on 41 shots, with the last one going into an empty net.
Bantam AAA
It was a rough weekend for the SEAC bantam AAA’s, with a pair of lopsided losses.
On Saturday the Tigers fell 9-1 at the Calgary Bisons, with Ford Gilbert’s third-period goal avoiding a shutout.
Sunday’s 5-1 loss at home to the Calgary Flames saw SEAC only trailing 2-0 through 40 minutes, and Josh Van Mulligen’s goal 21 seconds in to the final frame was a perfect start. But that was all the Flames gave up, outshooting the Tigers 50-15. Beck Boiteau made 39 of his 45 saves in those first two periods.
Bantam AA
In bantam AA action the Hounds fell 5-2 at home to Bow Valley’s Timberwolves Saturday.
Zach Herman and Jayden Richards had third-period goals in a losing cause.
Peewee AA
Medicine Hat Orange lost a pair of home games on the weekend.
After a 7-0 shutout loss to Wheatland Friday at the Family Leisure Centre, the local peewee AA side fell 6-5 to Lethbridge White Sunday.
Josiah Jackson tied the game with 3:19 to go Sunday with his third goal of the night. But Eric Price notched the winner with 1:38 to go.
Medicine Hat outshot Lethbridge 50-29.
Peewee girls
Medicine Hat’s Wildcats bounced back from a rare loss Saturday.
The peewee girls team fell 5-4 to Lethbridge’s Cyclones, but won the rematch 9-1.
Riley Gramlich had two goals in the loss, with Keyana Bert, Marley Howes and Katie Kuipers adding the others.
Myla Motz had three goals in the win, with two from Bert and singles from Jailyn Painter, Hayley Grad, Alyssa Guy and Gramlich.
