Cubs drop a pair on the road

By Medicine Hat News on December 16, 2019.

The Medicine Hat Cubs fell just short of handing the Heritage Junior Hockey League-best Okotoks Bisons their second loss of the season in a 3-2 battle on the road Sunday.

Desmond Crawford and Mason Fischer scored to give the Cubs a 2-1 lead in the first, but Okotoks answered back on a goal from Nic Jordan to knot the game up after 20 minutes then Joel Deeprose potted the eventual game-winner in the second.

Riker Franczak opened the scoring for Okotoks in the victory, pushing them to 26-1-0 on the year.

Medicine Hat slipped to 15-7-2 with the loss.

The result follows up a spirited 5-3 loss to the Copperheads on Saturday in Coaldale.

Noah Irvine, Brayden Anderson and Mackenzie Fritzler all scored in the second period to take a one-goal deficit into the final frame, but they were unable to complete the comeback despite outshooting the Copperheads 40-32.

Broc Merkl finished with 37 saves to push Coaldale to 17-19-1 on the season.

Dawsen Savage stopped 27 shots in the loss.

Goaltending stats from Sunday’s game were not available.

The Cubs return to the Kinplex Friday to host the High River Flyers at 7:45 p.m.
