Medicine Hat police responded to a break-and-enter Monday morning, where the residence’s occupant was attacked with bear spray.

No suspect has been apprehended as of press time, police say.

Around 7 a.m., cops were called to a residence at the 900 block of Second Street SE by a male victim who had been assaulted by two men who had broken in.

One assailant sprayed him with bear spray, while the other brandished an unspecified weapon before fleeing.

The only physical injuries the victim incurred were those caused by the bear spray.

A K9 Unit was dispatched to track the perpetrators down, but were unsuccessful.

The Medicine Hat Police Service Major Crimes Unit is in the midst of conducting an investigation and more information will be made available as it becomes known, according to an MHPS news release.

“While the investigation is ongoing, it is believed that this was an isolated incident and this victim was specifically targeted and as such, there is no general public safety risk,” the release says.

Earlier in the morning, police warned the public to stay away from that residential block, as they were responding to a “high risk incident.”
