After treating more and more people with preventable injuries, two local physiotherapists are holding “movement seminars” for the general public.
If one part of the body is tight and restricted it puts a strain on the rest of the body, said Meghan Longmore, physiotherapist at Cypress Sports Physical Therapy.
“We view the body as a whole. Traditionally it is viewed segmentally. Our approach is to co-ordinate the body as a whole,” said Longmore.
Even running on a treadmill over winter and then out of doors in the spring will have your body reacting differently, said Jessica Sehn, also of Cypress Sports Physical Therapy.
The running seminar is a favourite. They break down the movement that takes place in the body while someone in running. The seminar then includes determining exercises to run more efficiently and therefore faster, stronger and with less chance of injury, said Longmore.
The seminars usually accommodate about 10 participants so there is plenty of individual attention.
Golf and volleyball seminars have also been popular.
They are suitable for anyone from teenagers to seniors. You don’t have to wait until you have developed an injury, and typically an injury develops over time.
“If we can teach them early on it will avoid injuries down the road,” said Sehn.
Even seniors who make a point of walking in the mall to get physical exercise during the winter months could benefit from learning skills to avoid an injury.
The seminars are typically two sessions, each being about an hour long, held on two days/evenings.
