Metis Week kicks off Nov. 12

There are four events scheduled next week to celebrate Metis Week in the Hat.

The festivities kick off Nov. 12 with a noon flag raising ceremony at Veterans Memorial Park that it open to the public, with lunch to follow at the Miywasin Friendship Centre.

On Nov. 13, there is an Elders Appreciation Pot Luck, which is open to all members of the Metis Nation and their invited guests at 5:30 p.m. at Fifth Avenue United Church.

There’s a Metis Cultural Night at the Esplanade Nov. 14 at 6 p.m., which includes a bannock tasting contest, refreshments, a sash finger weaving display, capote making display and Metis kitchen party, featuring fiddlers, kigging and Metis dances. The event is free and open to the public.

Those looking to enter the bannock making contest, which has best baked and best fried categories, should contact Marina at the number mentioned above.

And on Nov. 13 and 14, Gordon Stobbe and JJ Guy will be providing free fiddle lessons at Fifth Avenue United starting at 10 a.m. in the community room. Lunch and refreshments will be offered at Miywasin.
