‘Vote for Dave’ signs depict as-of-yet unofficial independent candidate

Hatters may have noticed “Vote for Dave” signs all over the city this past week. The makeshift electoral signs are referring to Dave Phillips, an independent candidate who last ran in the 2015 provincial election. Phillips often contacts this newspaper during election periods touting his purported candidacy, but only officially ran in 2015. In that election, Phillips reported no donations nor expenses beyond the necessary registration fee, the News reported at the time. He has a campaign website, but it’s scant on specific policy proposals. Phillips is not listed as an official candidate by Elections Canada. The News has a policy of not giving independent candidates full coverage before they officially register with Elections Canada. 8-7
