Monsignor McCoy won a provincial golf title last year, and they’re well positioned to repeat after winning the South Zone tournament Wednesday. At Vulcan Golf and Country Club, the boys team of Ryan Hodgins, Jacob Dortin, Sam Bratvold and Owen Burzminski claimed the 3A/4A banner with a score of 211, with the top three scores on each hole counting. Both Hodgins and Dortin shot even-par 72 to tie for fourth in the individual event, while Bratvold’s 75 and Burzminski’s 81 weren’t far back. Hodgins and Bratvold were part of last year’s historic win, the first-ever provincial golf trophy for McCoy. Chinook was 21 shots back in second place, while LCI was third. Magrath won the 1A/2A title by 27 strokes over Vauxhall. Ethan Choi of Pincher Creek won the individual boys event with a 5-under par 67. Cardston’s Graedon Woodward was second, one shot back, while Magrath’s Paxton Maxwell shot a 71. In girls play, Catholic Central won the 3A/4A banner, while Senator Gershaw took the 1A/2A crown. Taber’s Alana Makarchuk won the individual event with an 81, beating out three Catholic Central players. A mixed event was also held, with Vauxhall winning and the McCoy team of Josh Forbes, Logan Sonley, Emma Hodgins and Norah Valk in second. Provincials go Sept. 23 and 24 in central Alberta. 9
