Man charged in motel standoff has related charges dropped due to witness co-operation

By Medicine Hat News on August 17, 2019.

A man involved in a standoff with police at the Ace Crown Motel at the end of May has had the charges that led up to the incident dismissed, due to a lack of co-operation by at least one witness.

Kayl Libke was supposed to stand trial Friday for charges of criminal harassment, housebreaking, uttering threats and three counts of disobeying the orders of the Court of Queen’s Bench.

The Crown said that since witnesses refused to testify, the case against Libke couldn’t be proven.

The charges stem from an incident the day prior to the three-hour standoff on May 29, which is what led police to the motel they were told Libke was staying at.

Police said at the time they deployed the Tactical Arrest and Control Team as a precautionary measure, as they received information that Libke could be armed.

The accused still faces 19 alleged breaches of release conditions, one count of assaulting a peace officer, two counts of mischief and three counts of disobeying provincial court orders, for which he’s represented by defence counsel Darren Mahoney.
