Segall Says: Western Canada Games are a great opportunity for athletes

By Kristina Segall on July 19, 2019.

I’m very excited for August to come! I get the privilege and honour to serve as a mission staff member for Team Alberta at the 2019 Western Canada Summer Games in Swift Current. The games run from Aug 9-18. Athletes, coaches and managers will come from Nunavut, Yukon, Northwest Territories, Manitoba, Alberta and Saskatchewan. These 1,700 athletes (includes Para and Special Olympics) are between the ages of 13 and 20 and will compete in 16 different sports.

The Western Canada Summer Games are intended to provide development opportunities for amateur athletes and to help them advance their skills in a competitive, but friendly environment. The Games serve to broaden the exposure of talented athletes and provide a training ground for national and international level competitions. Social and cultural events are also happening during the games. The population of Swift Current is 17,000 and 2,500 of their citizens are volunteering at the games.

I have been paired with men’s soccer the first week and tennis the second week. We have hosted several championship events here at Medicine Hat College, but it will be my first time assisting with a summer games event! I’m excited to learn lots and watch the best athletes in Alberta compete in the games.

I would highly encourage you, to take the two-hour drive to Swift Current, Aug 9-18, to catch some of the games. These athletes, are our country’s next generation of national, international, Olympic and Paralympic champions.
