Five local golfers are in the mix at the Alberta Junior Championship in High River that started Tuesday. Ryan Hodgins had the best opening round of the Hat-area contingent, shooting a 1-over par 71 at Highwood Golf and Country Club. He’s alone in 11th spot, four shots back of both Ethan Choi (Pincher Creek) and Carter Graf (Red Deer). As for the other Hatters, Caleb Kinch shot a 76, Nolan Burzminski an 80 and Sam Bratvold an 83. Redcliff’s Brady DeBoice shot 87 and will need a big second round to make the cut in the 72-hole event from which the winners will head to nationals. Medicine Hat hosted boys nationals last year. This time around they’re in New Brunswick, while Lethbridge hosts the Canadian junior girls. 5
