It’s not a milestone year but the Barrie Shave Classic tennis tournament is going big anyhow.
The 21st annual doubles event – played in honour of its namesake who died from pancreatic cancer – began Wednesday at the Medicine Hat Tennis Club with almost 50 teams signed up.
Competition should be tight but the reason for the event’s popularity is an atmosphere of goodwill, embodied by more than $125,000 raised for cancer research and junior tennis over the years.
Both men’s and women’s doubles crowns will be decided Sunday.
