Alberta Health Services has announced an online directory for seniors’ residences and long-term care facilities across Alberta.
The website has been designed so it is easier to find a seniors’ home when one is being considered. The website includes 345 continuing care facilities that have some publicly-funded accommodation available.
Max Jajszczok, executive director of seniors health at AHS, says for many people it can be challenging to decide where to live and the website/directory is a good resource to explore the options.
The website asks you to choose a city or enter a postal code and it then shows you the facilities in that location. In most cases there are photos, a telephone number and an address.
When you click on one of them you are taken to a page with more detailed information for that facility. It tells you the various levels of care provided there and the number of beds and category of care that AHS subsidizes.
There is also a note reminding readers that continuing care services are available through AHS once you have been assessed by a case manager, and if you do not have one yet you need to call Health Link at 811.
The type of accommodation is described and there is an area about cost. The News checked a couple of the local listings and some are still being developed in this category. There is also the following statement:
“Residents in designated supportive living and long term care pay an accommodation charge to cover the cost of services such as: room, meals, housekeeping, routine building maintenance. Alberta Health sets the maximum accommodation charge in designated supportive living and long-term care.”
AHS says there are 25,800 publicly funded continuing care spaces in the province.
