Traffic near South Flats will be affected as city replaces century-old water pipes

Work to replace a 100-year-old water piping system near Spencer Street gets underway Monday in Medicine Hat, the city’s water department has announced. That means the convergence of several routes on the heritage trail system will be closed off, while traffic closures near the South Flats will follow in July. Homes on the stretch of road west of the intersection of Kingsway Avenue, Dunmore Road and Allowance Avenue have been left without water several times in recent years as mains have broken. Last year, in-street work near the busy intersection went ahead and new work will go ahead in stages to minimize new disruption, according to construction superintendent Cody Hyam with the environmental utilities department. “This is a big project that will require some major detours and pathway closures,” he stated, adding breakages cause road closures and disruption for nearby businesses. “Once completed everyone will benefit from safe, reliable infrastructure in place of the 100-year-old pipes we will be removing.” Some parking restrictions will be in place throughout. Paths will close Monday along the Seven Persons creek corridor and leading down from College Drive. Parking to the west will still be available for the Spectrum and Canada Day festivals at Kin Coulee Park. Traffic accommodation plans will be released in July when the work proceeds to future stages. 9-8
