The Hat High Mohawks varsity baseball team kicked off the Tier 1 provincial championships by defeating Foothills Composite by a 16-6 margin over five innings on Friday afternoon in Okotoks. Mohawks pitcher Tory Nelson collected the win, which pushes the Mohawks into a matchup with either Cardston or Notre Dame on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. The McCoy Colts opened their tournament by topping the Holy Trinity Knights, 13-3 in five innings. Wyatt Study collected the win after holding the Knights to one earned run through five. Reese Whelen led the offence with two hits and 5 RBI, while Kayden Berndt added a two-run homer. The Colts will face the top-seeded Vauxhall Vikings Saturday in Okotoks with a ticket to the final on the line. Hat High’s Tier 2 squad also opened their provincial championship run on a positive note on Friday afternoon in Crowsnest, taking a 5-4 nailbiter from the top-seeded hosts thanks to a 12-strikeout effort from Payton Eddy.
