Support Lions Club’s initiative in the Third World with barbecue at M&M

By Medicine Hat News on May 15, 2019.

The M&M Store is hosting a special barbecue on May 18 to help collect used eye glasses for a Lions Club initiative in the Third World.

Hamburgers are $4, hotdogs are $3, adding cheese costs $1 extra and drinks are included, but those who bring a pair of glasses to donate receive $1 off.

The Lions then remove the glasses from their cases and send them to the Canadian Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centre, the only such centre in the country, where they get sorted, washed, sanitized and sent across the world.

Even if the lenses aren’t usable, the glass gets crushed and used in paint for road signs and other items that require reflection.

The unusable frames get sent to a gold and precious metal recycling centre and sold for proceeds that go towards the CLERC.

The barbecue takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and all are welcome.
