Facing Saskatchewan’s provincial champion and the guy teammate Janick Lacroix had to beat to get to the national final, Medicine Hat Boxing Club’s Tristan Deveau hung in tight against Quinn Neald Saturday night.

At the South Saskatchewan Classic in Leader, Sask., Deveau ultimately lost the 75 kilogram youth bout to the Regina fighter, but it took a split decision.

It wasn’t the only split that didn’t go a Hat fighter’s way Saturday. Dorian Baptiste was edged in a 62 kg novice youth matchup by North Battleford’s John Pekas.

Lacroix, in his first fight since taking silver at nationals, was the lone Hat winner on the night. The teenager stopped 26-year-old left-hander Brian Bazinet from Edmonton in a challenging bout.

“Big gangly kid, hard to get at because of his arm length,” wrote coach Kerry Fahlman of the 6-foot-4 Bazinet. “It took Jancik till the third round but he stopped him with a couple big right hands.”
