The South Zone junior high badminton championships were held in Lethbridge Saturday, with plenty of winners hailing from Medicine Hat and area. When it was all said and done, Notre Dame Academy went home with the 4J (large school) banner and Irvine the 3J banner. Nanton’s JT Foster won 2J and Gilbert Paterson of Lethbridge won 1J. The juvenile boys singles final was an all-Hat affair, with Tyler Miller of St. Mary’s beating Notre Dame’s Roman Cherniak. The Hounds’ Kailey Duchscherer and Marin Sinclair also made it to their respective final, beating a team from Chinook in the juvenile girls doubles title game. Rounding out juvenile (Grade 9) medalists, the boys team of Zach Ferguson and Quinlan McElroy-O’Driscoll from Ecole Les Cypres took silver, while Francine Seba of Notre Dame was third in girls singles. No Hatters won gold in the midget (Grade 8) ranks, but Irvine players took centre stage. Kiara Ressor won girls singles, while Kierra Zentner and Axton Ferguson won mixed doubles. Dr. Roy Wilson’s Silas Currie and Audyn Mattaur were third in mixed. Bow Island’s Alan Jnzen was the midget boys singles winner. Irvine’s Justin Jager and Noah Hawkes were third in boys doubles and Notre Dame’s Jordan Weisgerber and Kylee Waldegger took bronze in girls doubles. In bantam (Grade 7) singles, Ecole Les Cypres’ Gerhard Kneauer won gold on the boys side and Redcliff’s Kapri Booker won the girls championship. Booker’s Parkside teammate Addie Selk was third. 9
