Cannabis users celebrate first legal 4/20

A group of cannabis users gathered at city hall Saturday afternoon to celebrate the first ever legal 420 in Canada.
In previous years the group has been able to meet and smoke cannabis at city hall without interference, but this year they did not have to worry about laws.
The group spent the afternoon cleaning up the city’s downtown from about noon to 4 p.m. The group then celebrated the first legal 420 at city hall.
“A lot has changed since last year but other things are still the same,” said cannabis educator and group organizer Caelan Hart. “We’re definitely celebrating the legalization of cannabis and the fact that we’ve come this far in the fight against prohibition and we’re honouring the activists who came before us who made this possible for us to enjoy.
“People paved the way for this and it’s important for us to honour them.”
Hart says there is still work to be done around cannabis and laws surrounding it in Canada.
“Even with bill C45, the bill that legalizes cannabis, it’s not perfect,” Hart said. “Bill C46 has a lot of human rights violations with the impaired driving charges and things like that – over time we hope these can be perfected.
“A big thing is the myths still surrounding cannabis and people who use it. We hope to help clear things up around cannabis and help people understand why so many people use it.”
Hart runs a cannabis education website that can be found at
