Søgaard moves up a spot in draft rankings

A tremendous finish to the season has seen Medicine Hat Tigers goaltender Mads Søgaard go even higher on the depth charts ahead of June’s NHL draft.

The Danish netminder is now second – up from third in January – among North American goalies in NHL Central Scouting’s final rankings released Monday.

After a rough time at the world junior championships, Søgaard was outstanding down the stretch and into playoffs for the Tigers, eventually named the team’s co-MVP for both the regular season and post-season. His .921 save percentage was fourth in the WHL among those with more than 20 games played, while his goals against average of 2.64 was seventh.

The 6-foot-7 18-year-old can expect to hear his name called in Vancouver either June 21 or 22 during the NHL draft.

Also looking to get picked from the Tigers is forward Brett Kemp. The mid-season acquisition who hails from Yorkton, Sask. got ranked 171st among North American skaters, down from 156th in January. Though 19, he was looked over in last year’s draft and is still eligible this time around.

Kemp finished with 33 goals and 27 assists in 60 games this past regular season.
