Accused bank robber has his matters moved to provincial court

By Medicine Hat News on April 13, 2019.

An ex-journalist and college instructor charged with a spree of bank robberies across the Prairies has had his case moved to provincial court from Court of Queen’s Bench.

Stephen Vogelsang made a brief appearance Friday, where his matter was adjourned to April 18.

He faces two charges of robbery resulting from his October 2017 arrest after allegedly robbing a Bank of Montreal and Royal Bank of Canada in Medicine Hat. He’s yet to enter a plea.

Last week in Regina, Vogelsang pled guilty to four counts of robbery stemming from heists in Regina and Saskatoon between July and October 2017.

He was sentenced to five years in prison for the Saskatchewan matters, but with credit for time served, he will spend closer to three years in custody, according to the Regina Leader-Post.

Vogelsang worked for a decade at CTV Winnipeg, where he was a sports reporter and news director, before entering a teaching position at Winnipeg’s Red River College.
