The Medicine Hat Police Commission is hosting the annual Alberta Association of Police Governance Conference this weekend. The conference will draw 80 people from police oversight bodies from across the province. MHPC chair Greg Keen says this is the first time the Hat has hosted the event since he’s sat on the commission. “The purpose is to support excellence in civilian governance and police services in Alberta,” said Keen, one of nine people who sit on the conference’s board of directors. It will offer an opportunity for training, professional development and networking. There’s going to be a presentation to provide an update on the legalization of cannabis, which went into effect Oct. 17, 2018, focused on how it can affect police oversight in the province, as well as a session on strategic planning, said Keen. There will be talks on establishing police oversight for RCMP, public relations and an update on changes to the Police Act. 8
