The city is now accepting nominations for the 2019 Community Spirit Awards. The awards honour individuals who have made an extraordinary contribution to the community, having enhanced the quality of life in Medicine Hat for the past 30 years. Nominees fall into the following categories: Arts and Culture, Sports and Recreation, Compassion, Environment, Community Inclusion, Volunteerism and Civic Pride. Nominations are also being accepted for two Awards of Excellence. The Heart of Medicine Hat award goes toward an individual, organization or business who, outside of their core business, has made a major contribution to enhance the quality of life in the city for at least the past 15 years. The Change Maker award is geared toward an individual, organization or business who, outside of their core business, has made a major contribution to enhance the quality of life in Medicine Hat in the past five years through innovation, advocacy, or leadership through social, economic or urban development. There’s also an ongoing Award of Achievement category, reserved to recognize individuals or teams in Arts and Culture, and Sports and Recreation. Each recognizes an individual or team in an amateur or professional competition who has placed first in a provincial championship or who has placed first, second or third in a national or international competition. These nominations will be accepted and awards will be given throughout the year. Nominees can be residents of Medicine Hat, Redcliff or Cypress County, however their contribution(s) must benefit Medicine Hat residents. The nominator has to be a Hatter and the nominee must be a Hatter. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on Oct. 3 at the Esplanade.
