Daylight Saving Time kicks in, also smoke alarm battery-change time

By Medicine Hat News on March 9, 2019.

Clocks will be moving forward this weekend and Hatters are being reminded to change the batteries in the smoke alarms when they change the time on their clocks.

Clocks need to be set ahead one hour at 2 a.m. Sunday and will remain ahead until Nov. 3.

“Smoke detectors save lives,” said Medicine Hat Fire Department platoon chief Kevin Heinrich. “Everyone needs at least one smoke detector on every level of their residence and it gives them that much more time to get out in case of a fire.”

The Alberta Motor Association is reminding drivers to stay attentive behind the wheel with one fewer hour of sleep.

“When the clocks move forward this weekend, traffic safety studies suggest drivers will also spring into increased collision risk – anywhere from seven to 17 per cent higher on the Monday following the shift,” AMA’s website says. “AMA’s Driver Education experts can share tips on mitigating DST-related hazards, helping Alberta’s 1.8 million daily commuters prepare for the week ahead.”
