Former Medicine Hat Tigers captain Tyler Lewington made his National Hockey League debut with the Washington Capitals in a 4-0 win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday at the Canadian Tire Centre.

Lewington— who went undrafted in the WHL — captained the Tigers to a second-round exit in 2014-15, his overage season and the final year of WHL hockey at The Arena. The Sherwood Park product closed out his 250-game career in Medicine Hat with 18 goals, 94 assists and a plus-86 rating.

The 6-foot-2, 203-pound blueliner finished his NHL debut with an even rating, one shot on goal and just over 13 minutes of ice time alongside defensive partner Jonas Seigenthaler. Lewington —wearing No. 78 —was the first member of his team to skate onto the ice for warm-up in Ottawa and his teammates took their time behind him, allowing the 24-year-old defenceman to soak in the moment prior to puck drop.

Lewington has spent the majority of his time since graduating from the Tigers with Washington’s American Hockey League affiliate Hershey Bears. The seventh-round Capitals draft pick has logged 11 goals and 29 assists with a plus-14 rating over 201 games with the Bears, including six points in 26 games this season.
