The annual Beef and Pen show rolled through the Hat this weekend — bringing thousands to the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede grounds.

“Essentially there’s three main categories that we have on display here this weekend,” said show committee member Troy Sauter. “We’ve got quite a few ranchers here from around the area and that really spans well into Saskatchewan as well.

“We also have a steer jackpot running with the show.”

Sauter says the show was well attended.

“Attendance has been off the charts,” he said Saturday afternoon. “(Friday) night the building was absolutely jammed.

“It’s always great to see thousands of people in here, all of them having a good time — this is a really good festive event that we hold around Christmas every year.”

Sauter says the tradeshow was a big draw for people.

“The tradeshow is a big hit and we had a great steak fry last night,” he said. “There were six different breeds that brought steaks and we had a great sampling of steaks — that started off the event.”

With more than 20 years of shows under their belt, Sauter says the organizers are always trying to make the event more appealing for everyone.

“One thing we’ve been focusing on lately is drawing commercial cattlemen here,” he said. “Involving the 4-H groups makes this a full family event that people can have a lot of fun with and look forward to every year.”
