Several local businesses up for provincial awards

Ten firms in Medicine Hat or region are among final nominees for provincial business awards of distinction, it was revealed on Friday.

The Alberta Chambers of Commerce awards gala event will be held March 1, 2019 in Edmonton, with a notable increase in the number of firms from the southeast of the province being recognized.

Among the largest companies, nods for the Global Growth award of distinction went to Medicine Hat locations of Methanex and Parrish & Heimbecker. They are among the four finalists, which also include 2018 winner BioNutra North America, of Edmonton, and Canalta Controls, of Red Deer.

Software developer Kinetisense is up for the Leading Edge Award, after last year contending for the export award.

Safety Buzz training centre in Dunmore is a contender for the marketing award, and among young entrepreneurs Medicine Hat based Rustic Rose jewelry and apparel in being recognized.

In the mentorship category the Mavericks Baseball Club and South Country Co-op are both vying for among four firms in the province.

Among diversity award contenders is Big Marble Farms, located southwest of Medicine Hat in Cypress County.

Two regional companies are nominated for Customer Service award.

Silver Lake Sod Farms, near Seven Persons, and Heibert Cabinets and Fine Wood Work, of Bow Island, will compete with Peavey Mart (Red Deer), and Chinook Financial (Drumheller branch).

The awards are an annual event put on for the last 22 years by the Alberta Chambers of Commerce. Previously, Alberta Economic Development presented the Alberta Export Achievement Awards and the Small Business Owner of the Year award. There are currently 12 categories in total.
