Facing their biggest early-season test, Hat High’s Mohawks came through.

The varsity boys basketball team beat the Raymond Comets 113-107 in overtime at Hat High Tuesday night, improving to 2-0 in the Southern Alberta High School Basketball League.

The Comets couldn’t contain 6-foot-8 post Bailey Gosse, whose 35 points led the Mohawks. But they did come back from a 15-point halftime deficit, getting a clutch three-pointer in the final minute from Jaxon West that forced the extra five-minute span.

Gosse continued to do damage in overtime, but it was an opening possession three-pointer from Austin Walton that put momentum firmly on the home team’s side. Walton had seven of his 15 points in the extra time, while Raymond shooters missed three crucial free throws.

Eidan Jonker also had 19 for the Mohawks.

Shae Gibb poured in 31 points for the Comets, while Jeter Heggie added 27.

It was the second night in a row for a close game at Hat High. On Monday, the varsity girls edged LCI 77-74. Jordyn Knight’s 22 points and Kyla Kearley’s 18 led the Kwahommies, who improved to 2-0. Berkley Heggie had 19 and Krista Nelson 18 for the 1-1 Clippers.

LCI won the junior girls matchup 72-49.

In Tuesday’s junior boys game, the Mohawks won 72-70 over Raymond. Arche Belza and Gabrial Baldovinos each had 19 points. Raymond’s West James had 20.
