Leave it to the media to jinx a good streak.
No sooner had the News written a big headline last week noting that the South East Athletic Club midget 15-year-old team hadn’t lost in a month, that the Tigers lost their very next game.
At Hockey Hounds Arena Friday night, SEAC dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to the visitng Okotoks Oilers.
The Oilers led 3-0 through 40 minutes, getting two goals from Ethan Macintyre and another from defenceman Zach Stangness all in the second period.
The Tigers finally made a push in the third, geetting a goal from Tanner Gold, but Ty Hipkin made it 4-1 exactly 30 seconds later according to the online game sheet.
Ethan Machan and Hayden Prosofsky — who finished with three points — scored to give the home team a chance in the final minutes but they couldn’t draw even.
Aidan Low made 33 saves in the loss, as his team was outshot 37-31.
The Tigers did rebound with a 2-1 win Saturday against Airdrie. Machan and Cole Rath scored on the power play while Brendan Olson made 34 saves, his team outshot 35-22 but able to earn the two points.
SEAC is on the road this weekend and doesn’t play its next home game until Jan. 13.
Bantam AAA
Also on home ice for the weekend, the bantam AAA Tigers earned three out of a possible four points.
On Saturday, the South East Athletic Club team tied Lethbridge 3-3. Dawson Seitz had two goals but the visiting Golden Hawks rallied for two third-period goals to take a 3-2 lead. It took defenceman Elias Eisenbarth’s goal with 7:14 remaining to salvage the tie.
SEAC outshot Lethbridge 48-21. Hawks goalie Ty Young made 45 saves in a contest that only saw four penalties called, though Lethbridge managed to score on both of their power play opportunities.
On Sunday, Roman Cherniak scored twice but it was Tyler Broesky who got the game-winner in a 3-2 win over Aidrie.
Broesky scored with 2:45 remaining. Kaiden Morin got the win in net, turning aside 35 shots from the Xtreme.
Midget AA
Medicine Hat’s midget AA Hounds kept up their winning ways this past weekend, extending an unbeaten streak to seven games.
The Hounds shut out Taber 4-0 Friday (as reported in Saturday’s News), then earend a 2-2 tie with the Calgary Canucks Saturday.
Jacob Milne and Brady Dovichak scored third-period goals as the Hounds outshot the Canucks 40-22. Nate Hoffman made 20 stops for the home side at the Kinplex.
Bantam AA
The bantam AA Hounds got a big couple of wins on home ice.
On Friday they beat the Okotoks Oilers 5-2. Dawson Stewart, Caleb Garrecht, Brady Mahar, Carson Christianson and Braxton Thornton had Medicine Hat’s goals while Zach Ferguson stood tall with 35 saves in goal.
Agains the Moose Recreation Centre Saturday, the Hounds beat the West Central Tigers 5-3. Mahar and Braden Patey each had two goals, Ty Flaig had the other and Rylan Hodgson made 37 stops as the Hounds were again outshot, but helped by outstanding netminding.
Peewee AA
All the peewee AA Hounds do is win.
Medicine Hat has now won seven in a row and is unbeaten since the end of September. On Saturday they beat Lethbridge Hurricanes Red by a 6-2 count. Sunday saw them dust Okotoks Oilers Green 6-2 at the Moose Rec Centre.
The Hounds head to Cranbrook this weekend and won’t have a home game until Jan. 12 now.
On Saturday, Samuel Hynes had two goals, while Deegan Kinniburgh, Josh Evaschesen, Ryan Miller and Madden Kelly scored singles. Beck Boiteau had to be sharp with 37 saves in net.
Kaige Schafer made 25 stops for the win Sunday, while Kinniburgh and Noah Derouin had a pair of goals apiece. Evaschesen and Kelly had the other markers.
