On the same weekend as high school volleyball provincials took place, many Alberta basketball teams were already playing their first tournaments of the season.
Monsignor McCoy’s varsity girls took silver at Okotoks, edged 51-49 in the final of the Our Opening Knight Tournament Saturday.
Colts coach Janice Laing said in an email that her team “simply ran out of gas” against the host Holy Trinity Academy side.
“It was a gritty and determined performance from all the girls as we looked like it was the first tournament of the season,” said Laing.
McCoy began with a thrilling 92-87 overtime win over Edmonton’s Ross Shepard on Friday. They then beat Immanuel Christian 68-61 in the semifinals.
Next up for the defending 3A bronze medalists is the start of the league schedule. They’re at Brooks next Wednesday.
Speaking of league play, both the Southeast Basketball Conference and the Southern Alberta High School Basketball League get started right away. SEBC play opens tonight with games including WR Myers at Eagle Butte and McCoy at Crescent Heights in boys action, the junior teams playing at 5:30 p.m. followed by varsity matchups.
Hat High plays in the SAHSBL, with the Mohawks hosting LCI next Tuesday and the Kwahommies welcoming Catholic Central Wednesday. Tipoff for both nights is 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Notably, Hat High also hosts a tournament Dec. 7-8 according to their league’s website.
