The City of Medicine Hat is recognizing the International Day of Persons with Disabilities by supporting an event today at Crestwood Elementary School.
The two-hour event will provide a fun, interactive way for students “to learn about disabilities and interact with people with disabilities,” a city press release said.
Leslie Jerry, community liaison co-ordinator and local IDPD chair, says, “We recognize that the students at Crestwood are inquisitive. They want to try things out and to have their questions answered and that’s what we’ll deliver.”
More than 60 self-advocates, volunteers and staff from local disability serving agencies will deliver 63 interactive presentations at the school and host a school assembly.
Presentations are designed to maximize students’ opportunity to interact with people with disabilities, to try adaptive equipment and to showcase their skills and abilities. Students will try ramp bowling, stick curling, sledge hockey, new ways to communicate without talking, and much more.
The event runs from 12:50-2:50 p.m. today.
