National Addictions Awareness Week is being marked this week, and a number of related events are scheduled for Medicine Hat.

The goal of NAAW is to provide information and promote activities that increase the awareness of addiction-related issues and services, and to celebrate the capacity of communities and individuals to work together to support addiction-free lifestyles. Many Alberta communities participate annually with the support of local addiction services to:

— raise awarenessof addiction issues related to alcohol, tobacco, other drugs and gambling;

— celebratethe joy of addiction-free lifestyles; and

— profileaddiction information, prevention and treatment services.

The South Zone Addiction & Mental Health Prevention and Promotion Team will be distributing crystal pins and encouraging people to wear the pin as sign of support for addiction prevention and recovery within our community. The pin, with all its different colours, represents the many different sides and complexities of addiction and the recovery journey. In a press release, AHS says many Albertans are impacted by addiction, all of us hold different perceptions, attitudes, and experiences with addiction, and the key to understanding is to be aware of the issues surrounding addiction (why people become addicted, how to support a person in recovery, how to prevent addiction, the physical and mental impact of addiction).

Today, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.: Lunch and Learn regarding addiction prevention and refusal skills at Crescent Heights High School (for students)
