Pronghorn Controls, a company with a branch locally, has won the 2018 Canada’s Safest Employer award in the Best Young Worker Safety category.

“We’re humbled and honoured by this for sure,” said local branch manager Ryan Ford. “We put a lot of hard work into this and we were up against some really good competitors — it’s just a really great award for us to win.”

Pronghorn Controls is an electrical instrumentation company that works mainly out of Alberta in the oil and gas and industrial work fields. Ford says the process is long to win an award like this.

“I’m not part of the application process but I know it’s a really long process and it involves a lot of companies with really great safety records,” said Ford. “As the process goes along a few companies get picked out and it is sent to a judging panel to pick who they think is the best.

“We’re thankful that we were picked as the best in our category.”

The company has won Canada’s Safest Employer Awards in 2012 and then from 2015-18, with this year’s being different than the last few.

“This is the first time we’ve won in the Young Worker Category, so we’re pretty excited about that,” said Ford. “Most years before we’ve been in the construction category, which is good as well, but it’s exciting to be recognized for other things.”

Ford says safety is always the top priority for the company.

“Our president eats, breaths and sleeps safety,” he said. “Safety is the No. 1 core value at Pronghorn.

“We have so many safety programs and we never take any shortcuts — we very rarely have anyone hurt at work and we hope it stays that way.

“For our younger workers we have a really great mentorship program — this can be a really dangerous industry at times and at the end of the day we just want everyone to be able to go home to their families.”
