Ending poverty is no small task.

The local THRIVE group has pledged to do so by the year 2030, and held a meet-and-greet night Thursday at the Esplanade to interact with Hatters.

“We’re just hoping to meet with some people tonight and let them know what we’re doing and who we are,” said executive director Karen Danielson. “We’re also going to be letting people know what we plan on doing in the future and how people and agencies can join us to help end poverty by 2030 and to increase well-being.”

Danielson says the group has been a busy bunch lately.

“We’ve been doing a lot of engaging in the community,” she said. “We’ve been doing some community consultations and down the road I’m really looking forward to doing some investors forums.

“We’re really looking to getting into the community systems planning work.”

Danielson says THRIVE is a very diverse group.

“We have people on the education side, government, people in housing, social agencies and not-for-profits — it’s just a wide variety of different personnel representing all 13 sectors of our pillars,” she said. “More importantly we have people with lived experience.”

Danielson says the group will slowly chip away at ending poverty.

“It’s very much going to be a work in progress, doing little bits at a time,” she said. “We have some great work done with housing here in Medicine Hat and we need to work with that.

“We need to champion and support all the great work that has been done and is being done.”
