When you combine all the snow we received this week with the current seven-day forecast, it is no surprise that golfers everywhere are wondering if this just happens to be the beginning of the end for the 2018 golf season.
This isn’t a rare occurrence for us the past decade, so you can relax, because the answer is likely no, it will just be a blip on the radar by the end of it all.
As the coach of the Medicine Hat College Rattlers, this very same week each year just happens to be the first of two prep weeks we use to polish our team for play in the college national golf championships.
I can very clearly recall this same type of weather crossing our paths at least three times since 2012. Each and every year, the season has continued well beyond the snow storm and it was all but forgotten by time the local clubs officially put their courses to bed for the winter.
From the conversations I have had this week, as well as the information I have gleaned from the various local club websites and social media feeds, courses certainly are putting contingency plans in place for modified closing dates. However, most are optimistic the snow will clear and golf balls will once again adorn the fairways this fall.
For real time updates, I would strongly encourage you to follow the local courses on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You will see periodic updates and will be privy to any change in direction as things unfold.
In the meantime, you don’t need to park your golf game completely and wait. Think outside the box a little and do something for your game today, which you will thank yourself for tomorrow.
In the words of Ciara Bonogofski, one of my assistant coaches at MHC… “it is the perfect time to do some yoga.” I couldn’t agree more.
This is the ideal time to take your clubs in and have them regripped, head to a gym and meet with a trainer to work out your off-season plans or consider using this time to simply journal and reflect on what has transpired since April and set new goals.
Bottom line, take the positive look at this.
For now, use this down-time Mother Nature has presented to you as an opportunity to look in directions you would have otherwise ignored until November. Use this time to be proactive and remember, we still have some good golf days left in 2018.
