The Kiwanis Club of Medicine Hat dubbed its winners of this year’s Best Block and Best Residence contest.

The event has been held by the club for more than 60 years in the city and it works around a team of judges going through every block in the city to find the nicest places.

This year’s big winners were the residents of the 400 block of Belfast Street and Shawn and Karen Geiger — who own 55 Clark Crescent.

“We really weren’t expecting it at all,” Shawn said. “We got a knock on our door and we found out we were getting the Best Residence award — it was a big surprise.”

“It was a surprise because we think there’s so many nicer places in the city,” said Karen. “It’s very nice to win.”

The couple says it spends a bit of time working outside pretty much every day of the week.

“It’s fun, but it can be a lot of work,” said Karen.

“There’s definitely a sense of pride for us when we work outside,” said Shawn. “It’s something we do most days, at least a little bit, and we have fun with it.”

Shawn and Karen say they hope others can be inspired to work on the outside of their homes.

“It just looks great when you can see all of the work someone has put into their home,” said Shawn.

Kiwanis member Jan Owen is the chair of the contest and says it was another great year.

“There’s always a lot of interest and this year was no different,” she said. “We had people calling in and asking if we had seen certain places — it’s nice to know people really enjoy this.”
