There are not only coyotes in the Connaught and Marlborough areas but a couple of moose, too.
The city is no longer monitoring the area with cameras but has had contractors looking at the situation, said Dave Genio, superintendent of parks maintenance.
Any thought about possibly trapping the coyotes is being thwarted because there are off-leash dogs that could inadvertently be trapped as well, said Genio.
The city recently had to respond to the area when a coyote became unintentionally trapped between a house and a fence in someone’s backyard, he said.
Two moose in the Marlborough area coulee, where there are also coyotes, is not of specific concern unless they become aggressive.
“Tracking is not technically considered aggressive behaviour” in coyotes or moose, said Genio. The animals may just be patrolling what they consider their territory. It would only be aggressive if they were snarling.
“We take that extremely seriously,” he said.
When a dog was grabbed by a coyote in the Marlborough coulee in mid July, it was not on a leash and that is different, said Genio. The biggest concern is if wildlife attack a human.
The moose situation may be a little different as it is their mating season, said Genio, who is asking the public to be vigilant.
