The United Way of Southeastern Alberta rung in its 60th year of operation on Wednesday with cake, a fundraising barbecue and visits from supporters, partner agencies and well-wishers.

“We wanted to celebrate a little bit,” executive director Missy Fandrick said.

Volunteers served hot dogs and smokies, and treats from sponsors as part of a fundraiser at the Untied Way Office on Allowance Avenue. Well-attended by the public, festivities also featured visits from officials from companies that take part in the United Way payroll donation program.

“We’re very mindful that we wouldn’t be here but for the community and 60 years of tremendous community support is something to celebrate,” said Fandrick, who notes the 2018 campaign is in full swing.

In the immediate future, the United Way is planning to host a Haunted House fundraiser at the Medicine Hat Mall this Halloween followed by focus on the annual gift wrapping booth in the run-up to Christmas.
