A beloved pet was killed when two vehicles collided at the intersection of Second Street NE and Altawana Avenue on Thursday morning about 8:30 a.m.

One of the drivers sustained minor injuries, while a dog in the same vehicle was killed by the deployment of an airbag, according to a police report.

“The dog was riding unrestrained in the front passenger seat at the time of the collision,” says the Medicine Hat Police Service report.

Police say this is a reminder that the safest place for pets to ride inside a vehicle is in the back and in an enclosed kennel or crate. Although not the case in this particular situation, MHPS remind motorists it’s illegal to operate a motor vehicle with a pet on your lap, or otherwise in a position that may obstruct view or safe operation of the vehicle.

“MHPS offers its condolences to the owner of the deceased pet and encourages all motorists to keep each other safe while on the road by obeying the laws at all times,” reads a statement.
