Odd jobs for generous strangers allows couple to complete trip of a lifetime

Though they did not travel all the way to Hague, Sask. to meet members of the Fehr family — Fred and Teri Holt held a trip of a lifetime this month.

The couple left the Hat on Sept. 4 with Lisa and Bart Campbell, both couples in a 1920s-era vehicle. While they did not spend any money over the course of their 10 days on the road, the Holts brought $55 with them as an emergency fund.

“It was an amazing trip,” said Teri. “It was a very humbling experience for us — all of it was.

“It was really hard for us to accept things from people knowing we were doing fine back home, but the generosity of people was quite amazing.”

The goal of the trip was to stop in towns when gas and supplies were running low, and to seek out work in exchange for food, gas or a place to stay.

“A lot of it was yard work,” said Teri. “We were cleaning a lot of yards for people in exchange for some supplies or gas.

“Fred spent one afternoon working at a car shop and helped someone work on their fence. We also did some work on someone’s yard before they held a wedding.”

As the trip went on Fred and Teri decided to circle back and make their way back to the Hat rather than continuing on to Hague to meet the Fehr family. Teri says they wanted to let Bart and Lisa enjoy the time with the Fehrs.

“We eventually turned back and continued looking for work,” said Teri. “It was a really great trip for us and a very good experience overall.

“We haven’t even unpacked the car. We’re not sure when, but we’ll be taking it out for another road trip soon enough.”
