Man accused of impersonating police given week-long adjournment

Michael Carolan, 38, appeared at Medicine Hat Provincial Court in person as a prisoner. His defence lawyer asked for a one-week adjournment, so he can arrange a bail plan by the end of this week. Carolan is scheduled to appear again on Sept. 19. The accused was arrested on Aug. 15 after entering a preschool and becoming “agitated” during an exchange with staff members, according to police. He then claimed to be a police officer, saying he has access to firearms. Staff reportedly said they thought they saw a badge and a knife on his belt. This is far from the first run-in Carolan has had with police — he’s previously been convicted of impersonating a police officer and was shot by police three times in a separate incident. He was sentenced last year to 90 days time served for presenting himself as a police officer in Strathmore and offering assistance to a sheriff involved in a traffic stop. In 2013, Carolan was shot three times by police — once in the face and twice in the back — after refusing to follow instructions to drop his gun. Police had responded to a 911 call he made from his Ross Glen home. Carolan was charged with possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes in relation to that incident. Upon investigation, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team determined no grounds to pursue criminal charges against the officers involved. 15
