Former Medicine Hat MP and longtime area rancher Bob Porter is seen after he was named the 2016 Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede's honorary parade marshal. Porter died Monday, Sept. 10, 2018 at 85 years of age.

Bob Porter, who served as Medicine Hat’s member of parliament for nine years in late 1980s and early 1990s, has died.

A brief notice in the Medicine Hat News says the politician and rancher died Monday at the age of 85.

Porter won 75 per cent of the vote in his first try for federal public office in 1984. He ran as the successor to long-serving Progressive Conservative MP Bert Hargraves in the election that saw the party sweep in to majority government. He retired from politics prior to the 1993 election.

Porter leaves behind a wife, Donna-Lee, and extended family, which operate a ranch near Irvine.

A public “celebration of life” is scheduled to be held on Sept. 16, 2 p.m., at the Cypress Centre.
