1925 ~ FRANK SIMMONS ~ 2018 Frank Arthur Simmons of Medicine Hat, passed away on Friday, July 13, 2018 at the age of 92 years. Frank leaves to cherish his memory his children, Diane Simmons (Alfred Egan Home), Darlene (Arnie) Macauley, Debbie (Randy) Zaiser, Rodney (Wanda) Simmons; six grandchildren, Jan (Angela) Macauley, Dawn (Crystal) Macauley, Cody Zaiser, Brady (Katie) Zaiser, Jenna (Jamie) Simmons, Sydney Simmons; six great grandchildren, Jessika, Edwin, Autumn, Serena (Jan), Quinn and Willow (Dawn); as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Frank was predeceased by his wife Hazel in 2017; parents, George and Carrie Simmons; sisters, Edith MacGregor, Eileen Jordon; brothers, Gordon and Bert Simmons.Frank was born in Medicine Hat where he established a love for building boats and enjoying them on the South Saskatchewan River. In 1943 at the age of 18 he enlisted into the Navy to join the war effort. He served mainly on the HMCS Thetford Mines to patrol the Atlantic for German U-boats. Frank was one of the founding members of the Navy cadets in the years shortly after the war.
When Frank returned home after the war, he met his wife Hazel and married in 1947. Frank worked as a brakeman on the CPR but because of the added workload of having a handicapped daughter, he became employed at the post office so he would be closer to home to help.
Frank enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and traveling with his wife, family and friends. Frank’s love of animals and various dogs kept him company his whole life.
In his retired years, his boat building passion returned where he made multiple cedar strip canoes for himself, his children and nephew. He loved to talk about these canoes with everyone. He never had any pictures in his wallet of grandchildren but sure had a good section of photos of his canoes.
He will be missed by his family and friends but has left many memories for everyone to cherish.
The Graveside Service will be held at SAAMIS PRAIRIE VIEW CEMETERY, 5160 Gershaw Drive SW, on Friday, July 20th, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. with Dr. David J. Carter officiating. The officers and members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Robertson Memorial Branch #17 will conduct a Poppy Service for their departed comrade. BARDSTON Robert Bardston of Medicine Hat , Alberta died on June 12, 2018 at the age of 68. Raised in the projects of Louisville, Kentucky he went on to be the first black member of a major orchestra in the Southern U.S. A cellist with a masters degree – with highest distinction – in cello performance. A vocalist, musician par excellence and humanitarian. A brilliant teacher who's many students went on to positions in major orchestras in Canada and elsewhere, several winning first prizes in national competitions. His remarkable life was documented in a National Film Board of Canada movie: "Robert Bardston, the Bard's Son", and in "the Posi+ve Side", "PositiveLite.com" and other publications. In his later life, he became an activist in AIDS advocacy and awareness and was co-chair of CHABAC. He had a heart for the homeless, often allowing them to stay at his place. He was a generous, kind and compassionate man. He left a deep impression on all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. DAVID (DAVE) H. RAYNER On July 11, 2018, David (Dave) H. Rayner passed away at the age of 59. Dave was born to Harold and Barbara Rayner in Oakville Ontario on June 7, 1959. Dave moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta in September 1976, where he started his life journey and his family. Dave had many talents and hobbies; his most famous being his metal art sculptures. Dave's final destination was a small town in Ontario near Forestville with his best companion, Chewie. Dave will be dearly missed by his sons, Shaun (Cindy) and Brandon and his grandson Dagonet. As well as his sisters Julia Rayner (Jim), Sandra (Doug) Griffith, and his brothers Doug (Shelley) Rayner and Greg (Sue) Rayner. Including multiple extended family members. He will also be dearly missed by the mother of his 2 sons, Cheryl Rayner and friend Maureen. A special thanks to his wonderful neighbor, John Duitis. LANNAN The appreciation of a life might be succinctly consummated at its conclusion. That conclusion occurred for Catherine Lannan at St. Joseph’s Home in Medicine Hat, on Sunday, July 15, 2018; the origin of that life at the Leader Hospital, July 20, 1927. Catherine is survived by her son, Brian (Marion Bryant), family Jennifer (Ian Jackson, daughter Greta), Megan, Sean; son Shawn; son Neil; daughter Maureen (Gary Gray), family Brooklyn (Connor DeFanti), Alexis (Patrick Moore), Griffin; daughter Kathleen (Christian Aichner); sister Dolores (Allen Fitzsimmons); brother Milton (Anita); nieces, nephews, cousins, friends. Catherine was predeceased by her husband Hugh, daughter Mary, son Brent, parents Joseph and Katherine (Neigel) Deck, brother George (Glenna). Our lives defer to mortality, but our hope endures eternally. Despite Catherine’s love and admiration for flora, and fauna, flowers are gratefully declined. Donations to a favorite charity are encouraged for those who choose a memorial contribution. RANDY LEE CHRISTMAN Randy Lee Christman, passed away peacefully in Medicine Hat on Friday, July 13, 2018, at the age of 61 years. He is survived by his mother, Viola Christman; children, Cody (Chelsea) Christman, Justin Christman, Chantal Christman (Craig Ryckman), Lucus Christman (Tegan Deschner) and their mother, Donna Christman; grandchildren, Rachel, Rylee, Deegan, Cooper, and Coen; siblings, Betty Robson, Gerald (Cheryl) Christman, Larry (Gerri) Christman, Dale (Lois) Christman, Doug (Kelly) Christman as well as many nieces and nephews. Randy was predeceased by his father, Albert Christman; brother, Brian Christman and brother-in-law, Rick Robson. Randy was born and raised in Bassano into a ranching family. Throughout his life, Randy held careers in farming and ranching, lastly owning and operating his own oilfield company. Randy will be remembered for doing things his own way and for his love of family and friends. RIEGER-SEITZ Christina (Rieger) Seitz, passed away on Friday, July 13, 2018, at the age of 102 years. She leaves to cherish her memory one son Arthur (Marion) Rieger and one daughter-in-law JoAnne Rieger all of Medicine Hat; two grandchildren, Pamela (Doug) Gassner and Barbara Tamura; grandson-in-law Chris (Brenda) Price; four great grandchildren Angela, Nicole, Mitchell and Jayme and two great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by two husbands, William Rieger in 1975 and Edward Seitz in 1988; her parents, Wilhemina and Andrew Sailer; one son Eugene “Gene” in 1994; six brothers and four sisters. Through the years Christina was employed at Dominion Glass in Redcliff and as a seamstress for men’s stores in Medicine Hat. Christina was proud to have travelled and cruised to so many wonderful places. A private graveside service was held at Hillside Cemetery. SCHAAN Mary Eva Schaan of Medicine Hat, passed away on Monday, July 16, 2018, at the age of 91 years, beloved wife of the late Christian “Chris” Schaan. She leaves to cherish her memory three children Carol Kopec-Materi (Bill Kaleta), Betty (Les) Nickerson and Gary Schaan (Angie Kesslar) all of Medicine Hat; five grandchildren, Tammy Schaan, Nicole Ranger, Lealand Nickerson, Lindsay Comeau and Emelea Materi; numerous great grandchildren and one brother Timothy (Irene) Hammel, many nieces and nephews and her fur baby Pippin. She was predeceased by her husband Chris in 1980; sons-in-law Raymond Kopec and Peter Materi Jr.; one brother Simon Hammel and two sisters, Rose Schafer and Annie Getz. SINGH With her family by her side, Catherine Alice Singleton (Lucas) Singh passed away on Sunday, July 15, 2018, at the age of 88 years, lovingly remembered by her husband and best friend Johnne Singh of Medicine Hat. She also leaves to cherish her memory four children, Wanda(Warren) Stuber, Brenda Hemminger, Sharon Wick (Brad Stoski) and David (Faith) Singh; grandchildren Brandi (Max) and Breann, Ben, Rueben (Erna) and Tyler (Melissa), Rhenee (Jason), Richelle (Quintin), Chelsey (Dustin) and Shane, Ebony and Jessica, eleven great grandchildren, one sister Ivadell Davidson and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by one son Randy; daughter-in-law Shelley; son-in-law Jerry; her parents, Elsie and William Lucas; brother Murray Lucas and sister Dorene Badger. Cathy grew up on the farm in Leney, Saskatchewan and after meeting the love of her life Johnne, they settled in Medicine Hat. She loved animals, and had a passion for flowers, especially yellow roses. Her beautiful flower beds were an expression of her green thumb. Cathy also was a fantastic seamstress, sewing clothes, costumes, wedding gowns, grad dresses, curtains, and upholstering furniture for her kids and grandkids. Everyone looked forward to Grandma’s homemade spudnuts, fudge, and her turkey dinners out at the lake, where her and Johnne spent as much time as they could. They were never apart and celebrated 60 years together this spring. Special thank you to the nurses and staff at the Medicine Hat Hospital (5 East) and St. Joseph’s Hospice for providing comforting care, and to Leisure Way, for loving her like family. As per Catherine’s wishes, no funeral service will be held.
