Libke solid in victory

After his last start, Medicine Hat Mavericks pitcher Jared Libke said he’d like to throw with a bit more control the next time out.

He ought to be happy about how things went in Brooks Monday night.

Libke only walked one batter and gave up three hits in seven innings of a 6-1 win over the Bombers, who were playing their third game since league home run champion Riley MacDonald signed a deal with the Quebec Capitals.

MacDonald hit 20 home runs in 33 games before going pro, breaking a Western Major Baseball League record. The Bombers have now lost five in a row and are 10-25, last in the Western Division.

Medicine Hat improved to 30-6, clinching home field advantage in the first round of playoffs. Colton Wright hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to cement the win, which incidentally came just minutes after the WMBL named him player of the week for the week ending July 13. He hit .435 with 10 RBI in the stretch and now has six home runs on the season.

Libke, Medicine Hat’s workhorse a year ago, improved to 4-1. He’s gone at least six innings in five of his seven appearances.

The Mavs have a day off today before heading to Edmonton Wednesday and Thursday. They finish the week with three more games against Brooks, with home dates Friday and Sunday.
