A little brake problem couldn’t stop Dale Edwards on Saturday at Medicine Hat Speedway.

The 25-year-old Cochrane product made a few adjustments in the pit before winning a tightly contested second heat and moving on to take the checkered flag in Saturday’s baby grands main event.

“We had to get those figured out, but we got them sort of figured out for the second heat race, ended up winning the second heat race and then we obviously won the feature as well,” said Edwards, who went on to win Sunday’s main event as well. “We’ve had a pretty good start to the season in the baby grands. We’ve had three other races in Edmonton and we’ve won all three of them so far.”

While Edwards calls Cochrane home, he’s been growing up at racetracks across Western Canada since before he could see over the wheel and started competing at the Medicine Hat Speedway in 2008 — following in his father’s footsteps.

“I grew up at the race track, since I was not even a year old. I’ve been in racing a long time,” he said.

Edwards added racing has always run in the family. From a young age, Edwards was working on vehicles with his dad and the duo still continues to work together on their cars to this day.

“He’s still a big part of it,” said Edwards. “He spends every bit as much, if not more time on the car than I do. He’s still very much still involved and we love hanging out.”

Edwards finished ahead of Doug Voisey and Dave Deschner in both Saturday and Sunday’s main event heats.

Mitch Stovka took the checkered flag in the elite street stock Saturday, ahead of Jason Koska and Al Patterson, but Will Voth came through to finish ahead of Stovka and Koska in Sunday’s main event.

Douglas Voisey won Saturday’s mini cup car event by besting Kaylee Wilkie and Emma Fitzpatrick in the final heat, while Noah Banman took over top spot for Sunday’s event, ahead of Wilkie and Rylan Malone.

Chad Malone finished in front of Justin McTavish and Ross Statham Saturday to win the IMCA modified class, while Jesse Fitzpatrick climbed the ranks to take the checkered flag Sunday ahead of Jason Martin and McTavish.

Baby grands, elite street, hobby stock and mini cup cars will return to Medicine Hat Speedway for Darryl Adams Memorial Weekend, Aug. 11 and 12.
